TAKE the road to rock, reggae and acoustic music at this month’s Groovy Happening.

Bands and singers perform at the popular event in the Parkside Club, Butt Street, Haworth, on Saturday, April 1.

Albion Street blend elements of reggae, rock, funk and a sprinkle of jazz to present music that is experimental, different, eclectic and unique.

The four members hail from Bradford and Leeds, have been together for about six months, and are named after the street where they rehearse.

Caledonia Road is the Keighley-born acoustic duo made up of Frankie Anderson and Alex Waterman, who find their inspiration from Oasis, Arctic Monkeys and Bob Dylan.

At the Groovy Happening they will again be performing their own material.

Haworth artist Nathan Harrison, commonly known by nickname Nay, used to be the lead guitarist in New Age Syndrome.

He has been playing solo for the past few years and has developed his own unique style, with influences from Newton Faulkner, Andy McKee, John Butler and other percussive folk musicians.

Returning to Keighley, but playing the Groovy Happening for the first time, are the Bingley hard rock band 69.

The trio consist of Mick Jackson – a member of hit 60s and Love Affair – Dave Johnson and Alastair Harnby.

Groovy spokesman Ann Wiles said: “Do not expect similarities to Everlasting Love, Rainbow Valley, or Bringing on Back the Good Times!

“The 69 sound has been forged and chiselled by over 40 years musicianship. It is precision drumming, driving yet melodic bass riffs and hard edged cutting guitar, with observational lyrics and poignant vocals.

“Many have found 69’s sound reminiscent of Pink Floyd, Stone Roses, the Byrds, Muse, and late Beatles, yet they have very much their own retro rock sound.”

Groovy Happening opens the doors at 7.30pm. Tickets £3 on the door. Raffle and disco, with proceeds to Manorlands.

The band 69 last played Keighley in January, rocking up the Exchange Arts Centre with a one-song appearance by Mick’s former Love Affair bandmate Mo Bacon.

The gig marked the release date of the band’s latest album 69 Live in Concert – Made in Keighley, a live recording of a gig performed the previous year at the Exchange.

The band made their live debut last May at Keighley’s Octagon, playing Love Affair hits and songs Mick had written in the band’s heyday in the late 60s but never performed.

Once that was out of the way, Mick, Alastair Harnby and Dave Johnson were able to focus on the music they really wanted to create; new songs featuring cutting-edge progressive blues rock styles.
