A SCHOOL has apologised after a prisoner being shot in the head and the body of a beheaded man were among shockingly graphic scenes shown to one of its classes.

The 12 and 13-year-olds at Beckfoot Oakbank School in Keighley were shown the documentary about Pakistani girls education campaigner Malala Yousafzai.

The footage also showed the blood soaked body of an apparently dead man, another corpse slumped by a roadside and a man being flogged by militants.

The horrifying execution scene, included half way through the 32-minute documentary, shows a blindfolded prisoner being shot in the head at point blank range by a masked, assault rifle wielding gunman.

A separate distressing scene very early in the programme shows the body of a man who has been decapitated, with his severed head resting on his body.

Mum-of-two Laura Ingham, whose 12-year-old daughter was in the class, said the documentary was shown during an English lesson given by a supply teacher.

Miss Ingham, 31, of Bracken Bank, Keighley, said: “I send my children to school expecting them to be safe.

“I wouldn’t let them watch anything like that in front of me, so for them to be shown it at school is ridiculous.

“My daughter told me that they’d had to watch this awful video with people being shot and beheaded in it.

“She said that some children had told the teacher at the time, ‘we don’t want to see this’, but he replied they could look at the wall instead. It’s just unbelievable and I think people need to be aware of it.”

Beckfoot Oakbank’s deputy head teacher Sarah Phillips said the incident had been investigated and the member of staff involved was no longer working at the school.

“Although the topic is relevant and important for young people to be aware of, we regret that the students viewed such images,” she said.

“We take our responsibility to safeguard our students very seriously and have updated a number of procedures within school to ensure that such a situation is not repeated.”

Miss Ingham’s father, Keith, 57, who lives off Fell Lane, said: “I feel very strongly that Beckfoot Oakbank is responsible for what supply teachers make their students watch during school time.

“The school is refusing to give my granddaughter’s parents the opportunity to speak to the agency about this supply teacher.

“Why that teacher felt it necessary to show a beheaded body and another person shot through the head is beyond me.

“He should never be allowed to set foot in a classroom ever again.

“Even in a multi-racial community such as our own, there are limits to what should be shown to children.

“We can’t let our children go out into the world with blinkers on their eyes but there was no need for the supply teacher to show them that.

“Within the first couple of minutes it should have been obvious what kind of thing was in the programme.

“The teacher even said that if the children did not like what they were seeing they should look away.

“Teachers have a duty to be responsible, and this didn’t happen at Beckfoot Oakbank.

“Personally I believe the school needs to apologise to parents and apologise to the children who were made to watch this.”
