A MAN from Bradford will tackle a 50-mile walk to raise money for a brain tumour charity that has supported his ill nephew.

David Barlow, from Wibsey, will take part in a two-day walk around Whitby in aid of the brainstrust.

The 57-year-old’s nephew, Tom, was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year.

Tom, 31, from Manchester, was diagnosed following a series of seizures. He had an operation and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

The brainstrust is the UK’s leading brain tumour support charity. Its ‘Follow the Seagulls’ walk is taking place on April 1 and 2, and Mr Barlow will do it alongside his friend Ed Carne, from Ilkley.

Mr Barlow, whose training for the Whitby challenge has included walks on Baildon Moor, said: “I have taken part in a number of walks organised by charities or by me.

“I like Whitby and enjoy long-distance walking, so, with my nephew’s situation, signing up to ‘Follow the Seagulls’ felt the right thing to do.”

Will Jones, chief executive of brainstrust, said: “We wanted to create an event that would match people’s passion for the cause.

“Everyone joining us on the walk has their own incredible story.

“Like David, most either know someone with a brain tumour or they have gone through it themselves.

“The money raised from the walk will help us to continue supporting the 60,000 people in Britain who are living with a brain tumour diagnosis.”

The long-distance walk will include views of Robin Hood’s Bay, Danby Beacon and Whitby Harbour, and offer views of Yorkshire moorland, ancient monuments, waterfalls, the stunning coast views and smugglers’ coves.

The charity provides 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week support to brain tumour patients and their caregivers. Organisers hope the Whitby walk will raise up to £10,000 for the charity through the £10 registration fee and additional sponsorship funds raised by the walkers.

A spokesman said of the walk: “We get together for the start on both days, and meet up at various points over the weekend, including dinner together on the first night, but you will step into the role of navigator on this self-supported walk.”
