A NEW ‘scores on the doors’-style star rating system will soon show passengers how polluting their bus is.

All buses in West Yorkshire are to get a rating out of five, reflecting their impact on the environment. Eco Stars is a free, voluntary scheme which began in South Yorkshire and has now spread across Europe.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority transport chairman, Councillor Keith Wakefield, said: “Adopting Eco Stars ratings will have a positive impact on health and environment by ensuring all vehicles meet the latest environmental standards.”

Concern has been growing at the impact of large diesel vehicles on air quality. Air pollution can cause childhood asthma, cancer, stroke and heart attacks and accounts for an estimated 222 deaths in the district each year.
