THE owners of a Manningham foodstore have been granted permission to replace a "very poor quality" canopy built without planning permission.

Last year Bradford Council refused a retrospective planning application for the canopy at Manningham Superstore, on Carlisle Road at the edge of the Manningham Conservation Area.

Planning officers said the canopy, made of wood and plastic "causes significant harm to the character and appearance of the host building and the wider street scene due to its poor quality materials and its prominence in the street scene."

This week a new application, an aluminium and glass canopy supported by three stone columns, was approved by planning officers.

Officers said: "The proposal would certainly improve the setting of the conservation area. It would significantly improve the appearance of this site."
