WEST Yorkshire Police has confirmed it is one of 12 forces to ask the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to consider charges over election expenses.

A spokesman refused to state whether any specific constituencies or MPs were involved, simply stating that inquiries into the matter were ongoing.

The confirmation coincides with the announcement that the Conservative Party has been fined a total of £70,000 following the conclusion of the Electoral Commission’s investigation into the party’s campaign spending.

The investigation concluded there were significant failures by the party to report accurately on how much it spent on campaigning at three by-elections in 2014, at the 2015 UK general election.

Among the findings were payments worth at least £104,765 missing from the general election spending return, and up to £118,124 either incorrectly or not reported by the party.
