A 23-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed for more than three years after he was involved in bagging up heroin and crack cocaine.

A court heard today that Imran Khan, who had no previous convictions for drugs offences, was being given a hard time by associates back in 2015 and he eventually helped to bag up the Class A drugs on two or three occasions.

Barrister John Batchelor, for Khan, said his client was not dealing himself, but he had been trusted to bag up drugs.

Bradford Crown Court heard that in June 2015 police officers began to follow a Vauxhall Corsa being driven in the Tyersal Lane area in the early hours.

Prosecutor Christopher Moran said the car eventually stopped after driving into a dead end street and Khan, who was a front seat passenger, ran off.

Khan was arrested after a chase on foot and police later recovered a plastic bag which contained 34 heroin packages with a street value of £340 and a further 14 packages of crack cocaine with a street value of about £200.

The court heard that Khan also had £300 in cash on him.

At the police station Khan, of Little Lane, Heaton, told police: "It wasn't me. Anything in that car didn't belong to me."

Khan eventually pleaded guilty in June last year to possessing the Class A drugs with intent to supply on the basis that he had been paid to bag up drugs.

Mr Batchelor submitted that his client was "all over the place" at the time of the offending and other men he knew were effectively putting "peer pressure" on him to become involved.

The court heard that a warrant had to be issued for Khan after he failed to turn up at the crown court last July and he was remanded into custody following his arrest in October.

Judge David Hatton QC sentenced Khan after a reading a psychiatric report which gave details of the defendant's previous mental health difficulties.

Judge Hatton said the starting point for such offending was 42 months in prison, but Khan was entitled to a reduction due to his guilty pleas.

The judge sentenced him to 37 months in jail for the drugs offences with an extra one month for failing to surrender to the court last year.

He also made a confiscation order against Khan which means he has to forfeit the £300 which was found in him when he was arrested.
