CONTROVERSIAL proposals to scrap the Bradford South seat in Parliament have provoked a raft of objections, the Boundary Commission has acknowledged.

The plans, unveiled last year, would see parts of Bradford South moved into constituencies serving Halifax and Spen, as part of moves across the country to cut the number of MPs from 650 to 600.

A spokesman for the commission said people across Yorkshire had made their feelings known in a public consultation, saying: “Two areas we regularly heard about were Grimsby, where the public outlined why Grimsby shouldn’t be split between constituencies; and Bradford South, where local residents did not feel proposals to move some Bradford South wards to neighbouring constituencies reflected the community identity in the area.”

The commission will today publish any counter-proposals it received as part of the consultation. A second consultation will begin to gauge people’s views on these alternative ideas.

People can take part by visiting www.bce2018.org.uk by March 27. Revised proposals will be published as part of a final consultation later this year or early next year.
