TWO cancer charities have received a boost after a Bradford branch of Tesco got behind them.

The community team at Tesco Peel Centre in Canal Road is helping Jacqui's Million and So Sally Can Wait to reach fundraising goals.

Jacqui's Million was set up by Bradford dance teacher and choreographer Jacqui Drake, who has terminal cancer. The principal of Debut Academy in Shipley, she had an operation to remove a malignant melanoma in 1991, but more than 17 years later a secondary cancer was detected. In 2015 she had a lung removed, but her stage four cancer is terminal.

Her appeal, Jacqui’s Million, is aimed at raising £1 million for the Bexley Wing at St James’s Hospital’s Institute of Oncology in Leeds, where she is treated.

So Sally Can Wait appeal was set up by Liam Major to raise funds for treatment for his wife, Sally, of Silsden. Mrs Major is fighting advanced stage bowel cancer, and hopes to have life-saving treatment in Germany.

After reading about the charities in the Telegraph & Argus, the Tesco community team decided to raise funds for them, along with the supermarket chain's national charities, Diabetes UK and British Heart Foundation.

“For a small store we don’t half pack a punch when it comes to raising money; we raised well over £9,000 last year for our charity partners and this year we want to give that passion to the local community as well,” said Tesco Community Champion Tracey Porter.

A fundraising day at the store's car park on Sunday, April 16 (the store is closed for Easter Sunday), will include a car boot sale, fun fair, food stalls and representatives from local charities.
