A 22-year-old man was killed in a major crash in Bingley early today.

He was a passenger in a blue Audi RS4 which hit a tree and a lamppost shortly after 4am after the driver lost control near a sheltered housing complex in Bradford Road.

The driver, a 24-year-old Bradford man, suffered minor injuries and has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The dead man also lived in Bradford, said a West Yorkshire Police spokesman.  

Police sealed off the road for several hours while the circumstances of the crash were investigated.

A forensic tent had earlier set up next to the wreckage of the car which left the road near Ashfield Court sheltered housing complex.

Debris suggests the car stuck a tree at high speed causing extensive damage to the passenger side. 

A police spokesman said: "At 4.12am today police received reports of a crash in Bradford Road.

"Police and paramedics attended and found a blue Audi RS4 which had collided with a tree and a lamppost outside Ashfield Court.　

"The passenger, a 22-year-old man from Bradford, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.　

"The driver, a 24-year-old man from Bradford, was treated at hospital for minor injuries and has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.　

"A scene has been been in place throughout the morning but the road was reopened at about 12.30pm."　

Adam Driver, who lives opposite where the crash took place, said his flatmate was awoken at 4am by a “loud bang”.

He said: “My flatmate said people were stood around clearly distressed and someone was laid motionless next to the car.

“He also said they might have been cutting someone else out of the car.”

Police have urged witnesses to the crash or the circumstances leading up to it to contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team via 101 quoting log number 317 of February 26.
