POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an alleged hammer attack at Bradford Interchange.

The Telegraph & Argus understands the 'attack' happened on Tuesday night when a group of men, in their late teens, got on the bus and went up to the top deck.

The 640 Buttershaw - Five Lane Ends bus was parked at Stand C when it happened.

A source has told the T&A that the driver heard banging and saw the men jumping about when he looked on the CCTV camera so went to tell them to leave. The men left and it was then that the driver found a man covered in blood.

According to the source, an older man in his 50s saw the group of men approach the other male and hid after seeing they had a hammer.

Emergency services were called and the injured man was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with serious head injuries, said the source.

Oliver Howarth, Business Director for First Bradford said: "We can confirm that an attack against one passenger took place on board one of our vehicles at Bradford Interchange on the evening of Tuesday.

"We are now working with the police to identify the individuals involved from our extensive CCTV recordings and would urge anyone with further information to contact the police immediately.”

A police spokesman said the victim’s injuries were consistent with being hit by a blunt instrument.

He added: "Police were called by ambulance staff to a report of a man with head injuries in Bridge Street, Bradford at about 8.55pm on Tuesday. The 20-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment, but was later discharged.

"Enquiries are continuing and anyone who can assist this investigation is asked to contact Bradford District CID on 101, quoting crime reference 13170083081."

Information can also be reported anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
