POPULAR toy LEGO was used as the building blocks to learning at an event for primary school children in Bradford.

Youngsters from schools from across the city attended the LEGO Learning Festival hosted by Bradford College.

The children were set a series of tasks to complete using the brick toys that tested their skills in a range of subject areas.

Pupils from St Clare’s Catholic Primary School in Fagley, St John’s CE Primary School in Bierley and Feversham Primary Academy competed in activities designed to test their skills in maths, engineering, history, computing, science and literacy.

The challenges included building a structure strong enough to sustain weights within the allocated time; recreating machines from history following historic diagrams; programming a LEGO Mars Rover to navigate its way out of the maze; solving a maths problem to make a robot travel a required distance and writing instructions for someone else to follow to build a specific model.

The event took place at Bradford College’s Advanced Technology Centre and was organised by the College’s McMillan Faculty of Education.

Kirstin Sawyer, Head of School, Education and Professional Studies, said: “We wanted to host this to offer the schools in our partnership an opportunity to bring their staff and children to the College and participate in active, experiential, fun learning.
