EIGHT appetites are being challenged in a mighty meal-off at a Bingley restaurant with a collection being made for a local hospice.

Mavericks, in Main Street, is challenging two rugby players each from Keighley Cougars and Bingley Bees, two members of their own staff and two firefighters to see if they can munch their way through a mountain of food on Wednesday.

Mavericks’ manager Mark Evans said the evening was a way of testing the challenge for a regular place on the menu.

He said: “The idea is for people to have a go at the mammoth meals and if they win, give a donation to Marie Curie whose collection box is a permanent feature on our bar. If they lose they have to pay for the food. The set meals are huge but we believe can be done.”

The dishes on offer are 12 flaming hot chicken wings which have to be eaten within 10 minutes, followed by a 10-minute wait before the diner can have a drink; four six-ounce burgers with trimmings and chips; a giant mixed grill with a full rack of ribs or a 32-ounce steak, trimmings and chips.
