A “SELFISH” driver who drove through a red light at a busy Bradford junction has had a visit from the police.

Officers went round to the home of the registered keeper of a black Volkswagen Golf that was caught on another’s motorist’s dashboard camera breaking the law.

The car can be seen squeezing between a van and a traffic island on Manchester Road, at its junction with Mayo Avenue, while the traffic lights are on red.

It happened at about 8.20am on January 30. The footage was sent to West Yorkshire Police and the Telegraph & Argus by a motorist who said he was fed-up with driving standards in Bradford.

Sergeant Cameron Buchan, who leads the Operation Steerside crackdown on dangerous drivers in Bradford district, said the registered keeper of the Golf received a visit from officers on Saturday.

He added: “We knew the keeper of the vehicle from the registration number. We sent the paperwork out last week to ask if they were driving and, if not, who was it driving.

“We give them a certain amount of time to respond and I made the decision to send officers round.”

On the offence, Sgt Buchan said: “It is red for a reason. Other people have to use the junction too. They could have caused an accident.

“It is selfish and, in terms of blatancy, it stands out.”

He added: “I don’t think anyone could say it was nothing. I would be surprised if someone tried to say that it was something and nothing.

“It is a very busy junction and it needs to be traffic-light controlled.”

The motorist whose dash-cam caught the offence said: “I do hope they manage to get a prosecution from this. It’d be nice for the people of Bradford to see it, too.”

Previously, he said: “I really could not believe what I was seeing, but I wasn’t surprised. It was an outrageous manoeuvre to save about 60 seconds maximum.”

Operation Steerside has now caught more than 7,500 dangerous drivers on Bradford district’s roads. The mark was passed last week and the total is now at 7,522.

Last week, 99 drivers were caught speeding, 15 were using a mobile phone at the wheel, 36 were not wearing a seatbelt, and 13 did not have insurance.
