A 20-YEAR-OLD man has been locked up for more than three years for having sex with a girl of 13 in a concrete shed.

Daniel Maddison was 18 when he took the child’s virginity after she sent him indecent photos she had taken of herself, Bradford Crown Court heard.

Maddison, of Fenwick Drive, Woodside, Bradford, pleaded guilty to causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and to two charges of engaging in sexual activity with a child.

Prosecutor Michael Smith said Maddison befriended the girl and began a relationship with her, although he knew she was 13. He told her he was 17 and she thought he was “a nice lad.”

Mr Smith said they messaged on Facebook and the girl sent Maddison photos of her posing in her bra and pants.

They kissed in an alleyway and had consensual sex in a concrete shed on one occasion.

The court heard that two youths interrupted them while the girl’s family, who had found out about the Facebook messages, were out looking for her.

Mr Smith said Maddison had sex with the girl the day after her sister warned him not to contact her again.

In her victim personal statement, the girl said she now felt isolated from her family and friends. Her confidence was knocked and her life had changed.

Mr Smith said the offences had “a degree of planning or grooming” about them. There was a five year age gap and it was the girl’s first sexual experience, while Maddison had already fathered a child.

Maddison’s lawyer, Andrew Walker, said his client had a very low IQ and was intellectually impaired.

A psychologist had assessed his mental age to be younger than the age of his victim.

“He thought he was pursuing a genuine relationship with this young lady,” Mr Walker said.

The offences took place more than two years ago when his client was himself a teenager. But Judge David Hatton QC told Maddison: “I would be failing in my duty if I did not impose an immediate custodial sentence.”

Maddison was sent to a young offender institution for three years and two months.

The judge made an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and Maddison must sign on the sex offenders’ register for life.
