SOUTH Craven mums who experienced mental health issues during pregnancy – or within a year of giving birth – are being asked to take part in research.

North Yorkshire County Council, in partnership with NHS foundation trusts including Airedale, has commissioned researchers to explore women’s experiences in rural communities during pregnancy and early motherhood.

The findings will help shape public health and healthcare to address the needs.

County Councillor Janet Sanderson, the executive member for children and young people’s services, said: “We know how important the mental health of mothers is.

“What we don’t know is how common mental health difficulties are and how we can improve services for these women.

“The survey results will influence the services we commission and our NHS colleagues will learn more about alternative ways of providing support to mothers who have perinatal mental health issues.”
