COUNCILLORS have joined a businessman in condemning fly-tippers who are blighting an area of Bradford.

Fridges, mattresses, cupboards, carpets, building rubble and videos are among items that have been dumped in and around Ventnor Street and Percival Street, in Barkerend.

Bradford Council has refused to remove the rubbish because parts of both streets are unadopted roads.

Jazz Gill, who runs Fairmont Hall, in Ventnor Street, said he had tried and failed numerous times to get the Council to move it.

He featured in the Telegraph & Argus last week, and since then more rubbish has been dumped.

Now, he has installed security measures to catch the culprits in the act, and has linked up with other businesses in the hope of installing a fence and gate.

“It has got worse,” said Mr Gill. “And a rug has been in an adopted part of the road since last Friday, but the Council hasn’t moved that.”

He added: “I have got some floodlights fitted now, so the area will be fully lit, and there is CCTV in operation so hopefully that will now act as a deterrent.”

Councillor Hassan Khan (Lab, Bowling and Barkerend) said: “It is totally wrong. It is a real eyesore and quite dangerous. Children play around there.”

He added: “I make a request to the people who are dumping in this area that they stop it now.

“There are facilities to get rid of this sort of rubbish. If you have five or six items, the Council can pick them up for £15. It is just people’s mentality. They need to change this type of mentality. It is not nice for the businesses and the community.”

Councillor Imran Khan (Lab, Bowling and Barkerend) said: “We condemn people fly-tipping on the roadside. It is unacceptable – they just should not do it.

“On the whole it is local people doing it. They should consider that it is going to bring their own neighbourhood down.

“There is no need to drop rubbish on the roadside. There are Council facilities. There is one just up Bowling Back Lane for free.”

Cllr Khan said every household in Bradford would be sent a tip permit with their Council tax bill.
