COUNCILLORS have agreed to look at implementing road safety measures on a Bradford street residents claim is plagued by speeding motorists.

Members of the Bradford West Area Committee took action after receiving a petition from around 50 people living on the 30mph Frizinghall Road in Heaton.

Council officers had recommended that their request for traffic calming measures, speed cameras, or a one-way system be dismissed, but members have decided that further investigations are required.

The petitioners stated they were witnessing “over 90 per cent” of drivers using the road driving at “alarming” speeds.

The results of a recent automatic speed survey showed that the average speed of vehicles travelling down the road towards Buxton Lane was 22.6mph, with vehicles heading up towards Keighley Road travelling at an average speed of 21.4mph.

The Council also stated that existing traffic calming measures, a set of chicanes, was already helping to “curb excessive speeds and control driver behaviour.”

It added that with only two slight injury collisions in the last five years, the road did not meet the criteria for safety cameras, adding that a one-way system would inconvenience local residents and businesses and potentially increase the speed of traffic.

But, committee chairman Councillor Mohammed Amran (Lab, Heaton) said the speed survey was carried out during half-term and did not reflect the normal volume of traffic using the road.

“The volume of cars on that road is increasing and residents are really concerned, they want us to take action,” he said.

“We are organising a site meeting with officers as something needs to be done. There are major speeding problems on the road, and we need a thorough consultation.

“I want residents to be part of the decision-making process.”

Councillor Mohammad Shabbir (Lab, Heaton) said the worst-affected area was the sharp left-hand bend at the top of the road.

He said: “There is an issue with speed, and the chicane invites people to try and beat the car coming from the other side. It’s like a mini rally track.

“The best scenario would be speed bumps at the top of the hill, or maybe a 20mph speed restriction.”
