A Telegraph & Argus journalist has been recognised for her outstanding contribution in making life better for people with dementia at the Alzheimer’s Society’s 2016 Dementia Friendly Awards.

Leisure and Lifestyle Editor Emma Clayton received the regional prize in the first ever Dementia Journalism categories at the ceremony in Westminster.

She said: “I’m thrilled and honoured because my mum had dementia and the Alzheimer’s Society was able to offer her a lot of support. I’m able to raise awareness about dementia through my writing and cover some of the great dementia-friendly work that takes place across Bradford, including initiatives such as Dementia Friends’ work in local schools.”

An awards spokesman said: “Emma wrote from the heart and judges were particularly moved by the way she reported the living bereavement that families so often go through.”

Among Emma's fellow winners was Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust’s Community Dental Service, which won the Health and Social Care category.

Spokesman Anne-Marie Dorrington said: “We work very hard to provide the best service we can for dental patients living with dementia. We have looked at all aspects of our service and work with other services to promote good oral health for patients with dementia.”
