'Drop £139m bypass plans' call

Green councillors are calling on Bradford Council to abandon plans for a £139m Saltaire bypass.

They believe the proposals will have a massive impact on the Saltaire and Leeds-Liverpool Canal Conservation Areas and that it will leave the village with two busy roads rather than one.

The blueprints were given their first public outing last month amid opposition from residents who said they were concerned about the environmental impact and the potential for increased traffic.

A preliminary route for the bypass includes tunnels beneath Shipley town centre and Saltaire.

The plan is to create a more integrated transport system in Airedale.

The bypass could be constructed within ten years.

It links in with plans to scrap Saltaire roundabout and replace it with a traffic light-controlled junction at a cost of £2.6 million.

A motion put forward by Councillor Kevin Warnes (Green, Shipley) will be discussed at Tuesday's full council meeting.

Let me guess, this is another bunch of nutters who want everyone to cycle 50 miles to work and back, or use the non existant public transport links. Remember, butterflies are more important than saving lives by reducing traffic.

As the Chair of the Yorkshire RICKSHAW BOYS Trade Union, I would like to congratulate the Shipley ward Green Party who represent their unfortunate and long suffering electors in City Hall. My union is fully supportive of the Green Councillors, my members are prepared to transport the public by our cycle wheeled conveyances From the Upper Dales to Leeds & Bradford. We will offer a special rate to our first 100,000 customers of only 20p per mile, cheapest in the UK.

I am a cyclist believe in energy consevation not because of global warming but because its expensive. The amount of energy in fuel that is wasted by traffic in this area stood in traffic jams beggars belief.I would love a bypass all the way down the Aire valley plus many more. The Greens in Government are Dinasaurs with no real technical knowledge or any idea about economics or the science of energy disapation. If they really wanted people to cycle to work they would be propsing proper dedicated cycleways perhaps one linking Leeds to Skipton,Braford,Haro
gate etc like the rest have europe have built.
No the Greens are supported by gullable idiots the real green living people are never heard. The more bypasses the better for us all.

I'll tell you what - let's keep the planning in committees for the next four years and then realise that it won't actually make a difference.

After all - that is what seems to always happen.

Just look at recent plans for an Eastern bypass for Keighley.

People want to use their cars - they will not switch to bicycles in their masses, nor will they climb onboard public transport in their hoards.

We love our cars - we would prefer them to use less fuel or alternative sources of fuel - but we love our cars.

Come on elected members - make a constructive decision for once and begin the work.

Why not look at Hard Ings Road in Keighley and the rest of the route to Kendal whilst you are at it!

Those who have commented above have obviously not seen the plans for this road. It is proposed to be a single-carriageway and is anticipated to carry 10k vehicles per day. 44k use Saltaire roundabout each day, so it will take away less than a quarter. This will not solve anything and will just attract even more traffic like Bingleys road did. It will not be built for at least 10 years, if at all, and in that time nothing at all will be done to sort out Saltaire's problems.

Alan, how can buliding a new road attract more traffic? I don't travel through Bingley just because there is a new road, I travel because I have to or want to get somewhere.
I don't understand the whole 'get the bus' argument. I used to live in Thackley, worked in Leeds, two buses or a train and a bus to work. Compare that to the car, where I can drop my son off at nursery staying dry. And despite the ideas to reduce congestion, I don't travel down the M6 each morning for the fun of it, I use my car to get to work, to pay taxes to be not squandered on pandering to a cycling minority who think cars are the tool of the devil.
I need a decent sized car to get my family and luggage in, so why force me to cycle or buy a G-Whizz electric car when frankly, they're too small.

Graeme, what you say about a new road not attracting more traffic is exactly what Chris Leslie said about the Bingley 'Relief' road. According to the Highways Agency website (look at it!) the combined traffic volumes through Bingley on the old and new roads are over 50% higher than on the old road before the new one opened. All this now comes through Saltaire, as everyone living here knew it would.

I'd love a by-pass but Private Health is so expensive, I am gonna have to rely on the NHS and pray.
PS all those that said the Bingley By-pass was gonna be a white elephant can get a plate, put their words on it, use a knife and fork and eat until they are full. Bingley by-pass, Saltaire to Keighley - 10 minutes , before this - 45-50 minutes , you work it out, and hardly any traffic, Saltaire by-pass - YES PLEASE, I love hedgehogs but not Roadhogs, Butterflies, nah Flybys, *cough, splutter, NURSE!*

Yorkshire has failed and everywhere else hasn't.

If only the
-The M650 had gone ahead
-The M606 extended northwards into Bradford city centre and linked onto the M650
-The M65 was extended eastwards to link the M650
-And there was a good road linking Bradford and Leeds from the North

This would have meant reduced traffic in Airedale and on the M62 and it would boosted the economies of Bradford/Leeds, Airedale and East Lancashire.

What do we have instead?

Congestion!! -Unbearable at Crosshills, Saltaire, Canal Road, Hard Ings Road and on the M62 between Bradford and Leeds.

The Airedale Valley is bypassed between nowhere and nowhere, namely Kildwick to Nabwood and this isn't even complete because Hard Ings Road is single.

Look at the Calder Valley in Lancashire. The M65 goes through it to Preston and the M6 and the A56/M66 link it to Manchester - the third largest conurbation in the UK.

The Calder Valley has fewer people than the Airedale Valley. We pay the same fuel tax and road tax and the quality of our roads are far poorer.

The Bradford/Leeds (inc Keighley etc) is the forth largest conurbation in the UK yet the roads compared to Manchester are far worse. Why do we have this injustice?

We need as many bypasses and links as possible in Yorkshire. This will help everyone cyclists included.

What's not to get, we need a bypass to ease congestion. The arguments and topics arised about the bypass location and route are menial and ludicrous. Completing a road of this would be a huge benifit to airedale's traffic problems and would create a faster commute which otherwise takes forever. Alot of people opposed to Bingley Bypass but it needed to be done and is now considered as a construction marvel, people shut up shop after then because they realised that it was a good idea for the whole community. The Bingley bypass is a good road, but some people, the Greens in particular say it has just increased traffic in like Saltaire/Shipley. The only thing wrong with the Bingley bypass is that its NOT COMPLETE! It had to go beyond Nabwood and join Canal Road somewhere. If it was connected to the M606 that would really reduce traffic.

The A650 route needed to be a motorway - that would have reduced traffic in small roads and streets in towns.

The M65-M606 route needs to be complete in order to reduce traffic, otherwise you'll always have bottlenecks.
