ICE ALERT: Weather warning issued as Bradford district set for an icy night

THE first significant snow of the winter has led to school closures and transport delays in the Bradford District today.

But the inclement weather also led to an act of kindness when drivers gridlocked at Dudley Hill roundabout early this morning were treated to an impromptu coffee handed out by nearby Java Joe coffee house.

He said on his Facebook page: "You couldn't come to us, so we came to you!"

Snow is expected until later this morning, and although it will be heaviest in higher areas, it has led to slower traffic on most roads this morning.

It has been reported that traffic in Clayton and Greengates is at a standstill.

Carlton Bolling College is closed due to "treacherous conditions on and around the school site."

St Paul's CE Primary School in Wibsey is closed for the day due to a boiler failure and "poor road conditions" in the area.

St Walburga's Catholic Primary School in Shipley is also opening at 10am to allow families to make it in safely.

The Ellar Carr Pupil Referral Unit in Idle will be closed today and Margaret McMillan Primary School in Manningham will open at 10am.

More school closures may be added through the morning.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

The snow has also changed some bus routes. The First Bus 618/617 services are staying on main road in the Holmewood area due to conditions on estate. 615 is staying on Allerton Road. The 681 is staying on Halifax road through Shelf area and the 641 is terminating at Five Lane Ends due to road conditions.

There are also delays due to an accident on Rooley Lane Westbound at Burnham Avenue / Bierley Lane which is leading to congestion on A6177 Sticker Lane to Fenby Avenue.

The incident, which happened near to the ASDA store is affecting traffic heading towards the M606.

Four flights from Leeds Bradford Airport were cancelled earlier this morning: Belfast (8.15am); Glasgow (8.40am); Heathrow (9.20am); and Amsterdam (10.10am).

The airport re-opened its runway at about 9.30am, but there are still some delays.

Flights to Dublin (8.25am), Gdansk (9.30am) and Belfast (10.45am) are delayed, with updates for passengers expected at noon.

The Peace Museum in Bradford city centre has tweeted that it is likely to close earlier today "due to the snow so staff are able to get home safely".

Anyone planning to visit the museum is advised to ring beforehand on 01274 780241 to check if it is open.
