TWO Labradors have died in a house fire in Tong.

Crews from Bradford were called to the end terrace property on Moorcroft Drive at 8.35pm on Wednesday.

The fire started while the owner of the house, which is being renovated, was out.

When he returned he managed to carry one of the dogs out of the house. Fire fighters managed to get the other dog out, but despite best efforts to revive them, including giving the dogs oxygen, both the animals both died.

The exact cause of the fire has not been established, but it started in the living room of the property.

The owner, a man thought to be in his 40s, was not injured.

The fire caused extensive damage to the property, and a crew from Cleckheaton were also called to help secure the house structurally, as the flames weakened floor timbers.

Crew Commander Andy Horsley said: "The house is going to need serious remedial work to make it safe to enter again."

He said there were no working smoke detectors in the house, and added: "We strongly encourage people to check their smoke detectors.

"Incidents like this highlight the value of working smoke detectors."
