A POLICE constable, who knocked down a pedestrian as he drove to his Bradford station in his patrol car, has been fined £220, with £85 costs, and his licence endorsed with five penalty points after he admitted careless driving.
Christopher Lockwood, 36, hit the Slovakian man as he crossed Manningham Lane, Bradford, just before 11pm on April 11 this year.
He was driving his Vauxhall Corsa towards the city centre, at less than the 30mph speed limit, when he struck the pedestrian, who was wearing dark clothing and had been drinking.
Lockwood was monitoring oncoming traffic to check for stolen cars.
The pedestrian was thrown into the air and suffered extensive bruising and a head injury. He was detained in hospital for four days but has made a full recovery.
Bradford and Keighley Magistrates Court was yesterday told the accident had taken a huge toll on the officer who had not been able to return to work since.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is considering the case but he has not been suspended.
