A MAN has been hit with fines of more than £1,000 after being caught dumping waste on land in the West Bowling area of Bradford.

The 23 year-old, who has not been named, was said to have been caught by police fly-tipping rubbish on land at the junction of Parkside Road and Birch Lane.

Officers took his details and passed on the information to Bradford Council’s Environment Enforcement Team who subsequently followed up the case and began a prosecution.

After failing to turn up for an initial court hearing, the defendant was arrested and put before Bradford Magistrates where he then pleaded guilty to an offence of fly-tipping.

He was ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £1,114.

Bradford Council said they were not releasing the name or details of the man for “legal reasons.”

The authority has also refused to confirm the date of the offence or the type of material that was dumped on the land.

Last month, the council handed out its first Fixed Penalty Notice for fly-tipping under the new laws giving local authorities more enforcement power.

The case involved a man in a silver Renault Traffic Van who was seen on CCTV illegally dumping nine wooden pallets on the highway in the Bowling and Barkerend area of the city on July 13.

A man from Leeds admitted being the driver of the van and the person responsible for the vehicle on that day.

He was handed a fine of £400.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s executive member for environment, sport, and culture, said: “Fly-tipping is an illegal and nasty offence which we can’t fight without help.

“If you see fly-tipping taking place, please note down as many details as possible, including vehicle licence plate numbers and inform the council.

“We employ various means to try to combat fly-tipping such as monitoring known hot-spots, both openly and covertly, but nothing helps as much as members of the public acting to give us the information we need to take these cases to court and prosecute the criminals responsible.”

Fly-tipping can be reported be calling the Council 01274 434366 and asking for the Environment Enforcement Team, or contacting the authority online at www.bradford.gov.uk.
