AN event held to encourage families to read together more often attracted over 1,000 people to the National Media Museum and City Library yesterday.

The Bedtime Stories event was organised by a partnership of nine schools in the BD5 area, Bradford Libraries and the museum.

Children were invited to go to the library and museums with their families after school for a series of book readings by authors and storytellers.

They were encouraged to come in their bedtime gear, and there were plenty of pupils and teachers in dressing gowns and onesies.

Organisers had expected the event to attract around 250 people, but over 1,000 are expected to have come over the course of the afternoon.

Fiona Phimister from Bowling Park Primary School said: “It is part of a big push we have for families to read at home. If more families did this it would have a big impact on children’s reading skills.”

Vicky Clifton, head of learning and participation at the museum, said: “It is great to be bringing families togehter like this.”
