A BRADFORD foodbank has been given a cash donation of £500 from a former Lord Mayor’s Appeal.

The foodbank at St Columba’s Church, the Parish of St Mary, in Tong Street, opened in April this year.

A group of parishioners was inspired to open the foodbank after reading an article in the Telegraph & Argus about how a benefits freeze would hit more children in Bradford than almost anywhere else in the country.

Joseph Yewdall, who helps to run the foodbank, said: “We are grateful for the money, and it will help us to provide more food parcels each month.”

The foodbank has now grown to serve 300 people and hand over 900 parcels of food each month to people in Holme Wood, Tong, and Bierley.

The money was donated from the Spread a Smile appeal, which was set up by former Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Joanne Dodds, as part of the Lord Mayor’s Appeal during her time in office.

The foodbank is open from 9am to 11.30am on Thursday and Saturdays.
