BRADFORD’S Sikh community gave shoppers and workers free vegetarian food as a way of telling people more about their faith.

In less than three hours, hungry passers-by devoured 1,500 samosas, a vat full of fried bread puris and two giant pans of chickpeas courtesy of the Langar service.

Organisers Indy Kaur explained Langar was a free vegetarian food service served all day, every day, in all Gurdwaras but in the last five to ten years Sikhs have been taking the concept out on to the streets .

The idea is to fight hunger, teach compassion and make people equal by sitting and eating together, said Ms Kaur.

“To tell more people about what we do we have been celebrating a Langar Week. Sikhs do this in Colombia, Australia, Sweden and all over - including us here in Bradford," she added.

“Everything had gone in just a few hours on Saturday. We met lots of people from different walks of life and cultures and made some good connections. A lot of people had not heard about Langar and what we do. It was a lovely day.”
