Once again, the family and friends of a Bradford teenager have been left devastated by a death crash involving a sporty car.

While the exact circumstances leading to yesterday's carnage in Shipley-Airedale Road are not yet known, the incident immediately brought back memories of other recent fatal crashes involving young motorists.

How many more times must these senseless fatalities occur before serious action is taken to combat the problem?

17-YEAR-OLD PASSENGER KILLED AND 18-YEAR-OLD DRIVER SERIOUSLY INJURED IN CRASH ON SHIPLEY AIREDALE ROAD

When the Telegraph & Argus launched its Stop the Danger Drivers campaign at the end of last year, we called for new drivers to be forced to drive only speed limited cars with a maximum engine size for a fixed period or until they reach the age of 25.

Today, that call seems to be more relevant than ever.

The ability to handle a more powerful car in a safe manner often comes with experience.

If a teenage motorist wants a car purely for the convenience of getting from A to B - perhaps to get to college or to access their first job - then surely a vehicle with a more modest engine would suffice.

It could be argued that a 1.6-litre Seat Leon - albeit one that is 10 years old - is a vehicle with acceleration and a top speed that is quite unnecessary for everyday use by an 18-year-old.

We would urge politicians in this district to do their utmost in trying to persuade the Government to introduce new legislation governing the speed and power of vehicles available to less experienced drivers.
