AN empty city centre building will become a “wild woods” as part of an artistic project spanning four Friday nights.

Arts group The Brick Box is running a series of events in and around the large building on Darley Street that used to be home to Marks & Spencer.

The group is inviting people to visit the unit tomorrow night to help share ideas about what future events there will look like.

The first Wild Woods “after dark adventure” will take place on Friday October 7. The same night, The Forest of Light - an installation of giant illuminated sculptures, is running in City Park. That event is expected to attract thousands to Bradford, and the creative minds behind Wild Woods hope their event keeps people in the city centre after they visit.

Work to transform the interior of the building into a mysterious Yorkshire woods is currently underway.

Leeds based East Street Arts recently took on the building, signing a temporary lease for a year, with plans to transform it into a performance space and arts workshops.

They also helped Brick Box move into a temporary home on Ivegate while they look for a more permanent base.

The first Wild Wood evening will include interactive artistic events, workshops, food, a pop up bar and performances.

Eleanor Barrett, one of the co founders of Brick Box, said: “The event on Wednesday is for people to share plans for what we’re going to do about Wild Woods and for the project in the longer term.

“Our first event is on the weekend of the Forest of Light, and we really want to make that connection, so people going to it will think about exploring further up town. The idea is about improving connectivity. We want to make people feel more comfortable in the city centre at night.

“It will be family friendly and hopefully we will engage with young people. There will be some very eclectic performances. There have been lots of people asking how they can get involved.”

The event is still being planned, but it may incorporate the legend of the Bradford Boar.

The other Wild Woods evenings take place on October 21, November 4 and November 11.

Tomorrow night’s “open call for creative Bradfordians” will run from 7pm to 10pm.
