A CYCLING event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the University of Bradford is one of the highlights of events taking place this weekend across the district.

The University of Bradford Cycling Sportive will see around 100 riders embark on a 50-mile ride around the district on Sunday morning.

The route takes in sections of the course used in the Tour de France Grand Depart and the Tour de Yorkshire, and some of Bradford’s best scenery.

The two main rides will depart at 7.30am and 8.30am, with a fundraisers’ ride also leaving at 7.30am and a student group pedalling away at 9am, from outside the University’s Richmond Building in Richmond Road.

The big reveal of the latest landmark recognising Bradford Beck also takes place on Sunday.

The winner of the Friends of Bradford’s Becks competition to find the design for a new listening sculpture in the city centre will be unveiled.

It will be situated in Tyrrel Street, allowing people to hear the beck flowing below their feet.

The celebration, which starts at 1pm in City Park, will also mark the completion of the beck’s plaque trail through the city, and coincides with World Rivers Day.

Haworth Horticultural Society’s flower and vegetable show will start at 1pm on Sunday, at Haworth Community Centre in Butt Lane.

Tomorrow, the fourth annual Bradford Health Mela will take place at the University Students’ Union from 11am to 3pm.

The public can go along for free health checks and to learn more about how to live healthier lifestyles. The event will be opened by the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Geoff Reid.

A family fun day is being held by Keighley Cheekimonkeys at South Craven School in Holme Lane, Cross Hills, at 1pm tomorrow.

Entry is free for children and £1 for adults.

As part of the World Curry Festival, a sitar music concert is taking place at Kala Sangam tomorrow from 7pm. Tickets are £7.50 for adults and £5 for concessions, and are available at kalasangam.org.
