A BRADFORD-based youth charity is hoping to kick-start a major refurbishment project with a successful application for a Gannett Foundation grant.

The grants are being made available to registered charities in the district through the Foundation, which is operated by the US parent company of Newsquest Media Group, one of the UK’s largest publishers and owner of the Telegraph & Argus.

Bradford Sea Cadets, formed in April 1938, is one of eight such groups in West Yorkshire and, after a number of homes, settled in the former Feversham Street nursery school in 1995. The group made extensive alterations to make it fit for purpose.

Last year the charity bought the premises from Bradford Council and is now looking to make further repairs and improvements. New windows have already been purchased and fitted but there are problems with a leaking roof and the toilets and shower facilities need upgrading.

The group has applied for a £5,000 grant towards the total cost of repairs which, including the cost of the windows, is estimated to be around £60,000.

Chairman Sandra Howard said: “Our aim is to inspire our young people towards responsible adulthood through nautical adventure and challenge to give them a head start in life, to encourage them to reach their full potential by developing valuable personal attributes and high standards of conduct.

“Cadets work towards a wide range of water-based and general qualifications – including sailing, power-boating, meteorology, marine engineering, IT, first aid, cook steward, drill and field-craft, plus working towards BTEC and Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

“They are also encouraged to support charities.

“Being part of the group gives them a wonderful grounding for the future where they learn skills, teamwork and discipline while having fun.”

The youngsters, who total around 40 on roll, are inspired by 15 volunteer staff.

Mrs Howard added that refurbishment of the premises would make it more attractive for additional community use and and the group is seeking other organisations to use it to help with running costs. The Royal Naval Association and Royal Air Force Association meet every month, and the Actors’ Community Theatre was based there for three nights a week for rehearsal from April to July.

Completed application forms should be e-mailed to elaine.wilson@telegraphandargus.co.uk by 5pm on Friday, October 14.
