A CAMPAIGNING mother whose son committed suicide years after he was abused by a sex beast is hoping to enlist the support of her MP in her fight for more detox beds.

Dorothy Holt has nearly 4,000 signatures on a petition on the issue, and a further 650 online.

She launched the campaign following the death of her son, Simon, 44, a year ago. He hanged himself in Bowling Cemetery, close to his home.

Mr Holt had been sexually and physically assaulted in 1993 by self-styled preacher Brian Jackson, who was jailed for life in 2012 for a 30-year campaign of rape, brutality and sexual assault against at least six victims.

Mr Holt, a former postman and electrician, was so traumatised by his ordeal he fell into heroin addiction and was also diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

But following Jackson’s conviction, Mr Holt bravely told the Telegraph & Argus about his ordeal, to encourage other male victims to report crimes.

At his inquest earlier this year, Assistant Coroner Oliver Longstaff decided Mr Holt had intended to take his life, adding his death was a tragedy connected to his horrific experiences at the hands of Jackson.

Mrs Holt set up a Facebook page, Justice for Simon Holt, in a bid to get more detoxification beds for drink and drug addicts.

Last Friday she met Bradford East Labour MP Imran Hussain to tell him about her campaign.

She said: “The system is failing. There are not enough detox beds in the district. When the addicts ask for help, there are no beds for them. There is a desperate need for more.

“I am looking to get enough names on the petition to take it to Parliament so that something can be done. I am asking Mr Hussain to support me, and for the public to go on to the Facebook page and pledge their support.”

Mr Hussain said: “This is an extremely tragic case which highlights serious concerns about the support available, within mental health and substance misuse services, for the most vulnerable in our society. I will be meeting the family to discuss these issues.”
