PARALYMPIC star Danielle Brown received a hero’s welcome when she returned to her first archery club to open its new clubhouse.

The double gold medallist, who is originally from Lothersdale in Craven, visited the Aire Valley Archers at Harden’s St Ives Estate yesterday to cut the ribbon on the new building.

She brought both her Beijing and London gold medals with her, and spoke about the role the club had played in her success.

It was there that she first tried out the sport, and she trained at the club from the ages of 15 to 18.

Speaking to the Telegraph and Argus, Ms Brown, who now works as a speaker and coach, said: “I think it is really important to never forget where you have come from, because I wouldn’t be where I am if I hadn’t been on that initial beginners’ course.”

Ms Brown, who did not qualify for this year’s Rio Paralympics because of a change in the disability classifications, said she wished Team GB the best but probably wouldn’t be watching.

She said: “I’m disappointed I won’t be there to defend my title. To be honest, I have got that many businesses I work in, and that I am really enjoying and finding rewarding, that I don’t have time to watch much TV.

“I will be supporting all the athletes. I know how much time and dedication goes in and I know how exciting and nerve-racking it is to represent your country.”

Aire Valley Archers’ new clubhouse was paid for thanks to a £65,000 Sport England grant as well as £12,000 of club money.

It has a kitchen, store and bow-tuning area.

Committee member Adam Roe said it was designed to be completely off-grid, with solar panels due to be fitted shortly.

He said it was far better than the old clubhouse, which had been on-site for around 30 years.

He said: “It was on its last legs. It started to leak and it is not fit for any purpose at all.

“The new clubhouse has been around three-and-a-half years in the making, from getting the go-ahead from the committee.”

The improvements have meant the club is also now more accessible for people with disabilities.

The club’s celebrations were continuing into today, when it was holding an open day, giving people the chance to try out the sport.
