FINAL preparations are being made for a major fundraiser in aid of Manorlands.

Walkers will put their best foot forward on Saturday, September 3, to raise money for the Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice.

And among those taking part in the Starlight Hike is Lisa Balderstone, who has spoken of how participation in last year’s event helped her cope with the loss of her father.

“The hike was just three weeks after dad passed away,” she said.

“He spent his last 24 hours in Manorlands and the love and care we all received during that time is something we will never forget.

“Dad died only five weeks after a cancer diagnosis at the age of 64, leaving us all shellshocked.

“The hike gave us something positive to focus our efforts on at a really difficult time.

“The atmosphere on the night was amazing and really did make us feel we weren’t alone in our grief.

“We were dreading walking through the hospice grounds but in reality found it an amazingly touching and tranquil experience.

“We’ll support the hike as long as it continues and would urge everyone else to do so.

“As we learned last summer, no-one really knows what’s around the corner and it’s imperative that the hospice is well supported and can continue to support families such as ourselves in their time of despair.”

Hike participants will follow a 10km route around the Worth Valley.

The evening will begin at Oxenhope Station, where there will be music, stalls, entertainment and a warm-up.

People will then board the Starlight Express – one of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway’s steam trains specially re-named for the night – and travel to Oakworth, where the walk will begin.

The hike will follow a marshalled route through Oakworth and Haworth and back towards Oxenhope, taking in the Starlight Avenue – within the hospice grounds – where participants can hang a star dedicated to the life of a loved one.

At the finish, walkers will receive a goody bag and hot sandwich.

Headline sponsor of this year’s hike is Stirk Lambert & Co accountants.

Places are still available with adult entry costing £18.

Manorlands is also encouraging people who are taking part in memory of a friend or family member to set up an online tribute page.

Senior Manorlands fundraiser Hayley Ibbotson said: “It’s so important that we are able to continue make a difference and provide incredible care to more families like Lisa’s in the future.

“Events like the Starlight Hike are a vital way of raising funds to ensure this is possible and it’s always a great evening that brings the whole community together.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has signed-up so far.”
