FOOD giant Nestlé has started an investigation following a complaint from a Bradford woman about one of its products.

The woman, of Thornton, who asked not to be named, complained to the company after she said a contaminated pack of Rolo chocolates nearly caused her young granddaughter to choke.

The sweets had a white foam-like substance in it which Nestlé has now admitted fault for.

The woman said she is worried about other Nestlé products being contaminated because many of its products are aimed at children.

She said: “I am just so relieved my granddaughter is of the age to realise when something is not right with what she is eating.

“I had to remove this ‘foreign body’ from her mouth as she was choking.

“Rolo was my granddaughter’s favourite treat and now she she won’t go near them.

“I complained to them because it shows a lack of care and attention, and I don’t want this to happen to other people’s children.”

The chocolates were sent back to Nestlé, which found they contained white fibres it said “may have originated from wadding, cloth or a conveyor belt” prompting its probe.

In a letter to the woman, Nestlé said it was “at something of a loss to explain how this incident occurred, particularly in view of our continuous quality control checks”.

“We are especially concerned when, despite the precautions we take, a foreign material is found in one of our products,” it continued.

Rolo chocolates are produced and packaged at the company’s factory in Fawdon, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The sweets were purchased earlier this month at the Asda supermarket in Ingleby Road, Lidget Green.

A Nestlé spokesman said it was not believed that any other products were affected.

The company has also formally apologised to the woman and her granddaughter, and offered her compensation of £40.

A spokesman for Nestlé UK & Ireland told the Telegraph & Argus: “We are very sorry that one of our products has been found in this condition.

“We are committed to the safety and quality of our products, and we take reports like this very seriously.

“As is our standard practice, we alerted our production facility immediately after receiving the complaint, and a full assessment has been completed at the plant based on the information received.

“We are in contact with the consumer concerned and have apologised, and we are keeping them informed about our investigation.

“We would like to reassure our consumers and customers that all our products are completely safe.

“We have not received any other complaints about this particular production run and we believe that this is an isolated incident.”
