WEEKS of nervous waiting come to an end for thousands of local teenagers today, as they pick up their GCSE results.

Schools across the district will open to allow students to collect their results, with many deciding what their next steps will be. A number of events have been planned to offer advice to pupils who may not have achieved the results they hoped for.

It will be the final time students will be graded in the traditional manner, with grades A* to G, ahead of Government reforms being introduced next year.

And for some local schools it will be the first time their pupils pick up GCSEs. Dixons Kings Academy in Lidget Green was set up in 2011 as one of the first Free Schools in the country, and its first set of Year 11 pupils get their results today.

Nationally, girls are expected to maintain their dominance over boys across the majority of subjects.

Connexions Bradford, a guidance service for local young people, is holding post-result advice events across Bradford and Keighley.

Liz Hemsley, prospects manager, said: “Young people around the country are now making decisions that will have an impact for the rest of their lives.

“If you are aged 16 or 17 and need help making a decision about where to study or train we can help.

“Expert personal advisers are here to provide support and impartial advice to help you make the best decision for your future.”

Drop-in sessions have been organised, one running this afternoon from 1pm to 4pm at Culture Fusion, Thornton Road, and another tomorrow, from 11am to 2pm at Keighley Connexions Centre at the town hall.

Students can also contact a personal adviser online by visiting connexionsbradford.co.uk or calling 01274 377800.

Councillor Imran Khan, Bradford Council’s portfolio holder for education, employment and skills, said: “This can be a stressful time for young people.

“These events offer expert and impartial advice to help them consider their next steps.”

Bradford College and Shipley College are holding open days today and tomorrow for students considering their next steps.
