A DRIVER caught on a dashboard camera going through a red light in Bradford has held his hands up to the offence and told police he “was in a rush”.

The 38-year-old man, of Nab Wood, Shipley, received a £100 fine and had three points put on his driving licence.

He was caught on camera driving a silver Astra through a red traffic light in Duckworth Lane, near Bradford Royal Infirmary, on June 19 this year.

The footage of the incident was sent to the Telegraph & Argus as part of our Stop the Danger Drivers campaign and was passed on to the police’s Operation Steerside team.

The offending driver overtook cars that were waiting at traffic lights at the junction with Squire Lane, before driving through the red light and narrowly avoiding cars joining Duckworth Lane.

The driver, whose dashboard camera captured the incident, said at the time: “It’s just ridiculous. I was quite shocked by what I saw.

“They didn’t seem to care that they had gone through the lights.”

Sergeant Cameron Buchan, who is leading Steerside, said the Astra was a company car and the driver was tracked down after the firm was contacted by police.

“He was a little bit taken aback,” said Sgt Buchan. “He was not aware he had been caught on dash-cam. He is now more aware that there is more than just the police out there.

“The public are our eyes and ears - almost like extra police on the streets - and it is brilliant.”

Sgt Buchan said the punishment was proportionate to the offence, and added: “There are no aggravating factors. He has not caused any problems.

“He said he was in a rush.

“It was that level of selfishness where no-one is put at risk, but they just do not abide by the rules.”

Last week, Steerside officers caught a further 130 drivers breaking the law in Bradford district, with Sgt Buchan saying Girlington was a hotspot for offences.

The 130 offences were: speeding 51; 11 using a mobile phone at the wheel; 49 not wearing a seatbelt; five driving without insurance; and 14 other offences.

Seven vehicles were seized from drivers who had no licence or insurance or who were disqualified.

A total of 4,355 drivers have been caught by Steerside officers since the operation started in February.

Sgt Buchan also urged motorists to check they have a valid MOT.

He said: “We seem to be getting a lot of people whose MOTs have run out. I would urge people to check when their MOT is due.”
