Man on roof arrested after police stand-off in Westminster Terrace, Undercliffe

Today, residents and police were counting the cost after a man caused many thousands of pounds worth of damage by ripping slates from a house roof and throwing them at officers and police vehicles.

At least four police cars were damaged, with smashed windows and bodywork, in the incident in Westminster Terrace near its junction with Prospect Road, off Otley Road, Undercliffe.

The man had been on the roof of the property for many hours, since around 8.50am yesterday until the evening.

Witness Muhammad Khurram, 24, said: “When I got here the police were here, and I saw him throw slates at the police officers and smash cars,” he said.

“I don’t know why he is up there, but people are saying the police came to arrest him and that’s the reason.”

Another witness said: “The police were scattered everywhere. Apparently he is wanted by the police and he has been threatening to jump to avoid being arrested.”

As police negotiators tried to resolve the situation throughout the day, the man hurled objects at the street below. Residents had been told to move their cars.

A crowd of more than 100 people gathered at the junction of Westminster Road and Prospect Road to watch the drama unfold, with one witness saying a group of youths had thrown missiles, including eggs and rocks, at police officers trying to deal with the situation.

One of the video vans forming the barricade had its front offside tyre slashed by onlookers.

As the man appeared on the roof, several members of the crowd cheered and shouted “go on Danny boy.”

Other witnesses also said the man was on the roof of his grandma’s house.

A local shopkeeper said the man had caused residents’ problems because they were unable to get to their homes.

She also condemned those who had thrown missiles. “I don’t know why they do that. I have refused to sell them eggs.”

A large police presence at about 3.30pm

Pictures have emerged showing damage to one police vehicle and two of the worst damaged cars were removed on a low-loader.

Dramatic video footage shows the man clambering acorss the roof of terrace homes and throwing three missiles towards police below.

Earlier yesterday, a West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Police are currently attending an incident in Westminster Terrace, Bradford where a male is on the roof of a property.

"Objects have been thrown and damage has been caused to a number of vehicles, but no officers have been injured.

"Officers are maintaining dialogue with the man and attempts are continuing to resolve this situation safely."

The man on the roof disappeared out of sight for lengthy periods, but made another appearance at around 3pm to hurl more objects in the direction of police.

Another onlooker said some people had been trying to pass chips up to the man.

At around 5pm an fire engine with an aerial platform from Bradford Fire Station was sent to assist but was not needed.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said the man came down from the roof via a Velux-type window and was arrested by police officers.
