A WAR veteran is looking to get in touch with descendants of soldiers he fought alongside in the Korean War.

Brian Hough, who served alongside Yorkshire soldiers during the war, is acting on behalf of the authorities at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan, South Korea.

More than 800 British servicemen are buried at the cemetery, and the local authorities are hoping to obtain photographs of the soldiers who are commemorated by the memorial.

The photographs will be added to the soldier’s records, and also placed on the walls of the cemetery’s hall of remembrance.

Mr Hough, who lives in Hyde, Cheshire is appealing to families of the six Bradford soldiers to come forward with photos.

Fusilier James Cannon died in January 1951, aged 24, Fus. Robert Keenan died in October 1951, aged 22, Corporal David Kenehan died in May 1953, aged 19, Private Fearnley North died in March 1952, aged 22, Pte. Ronald Sugden died in November 1951, aged 19, and Fus. Lawrence Walker died in April 51, aged 23.

Mr Hough, 83, said: “In Korea my company, D. Company, 1st King’s Regiment, served alongside the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, from Yorkshire.

“During the Battle of Hook in May 1953, my company were moved to the left flank of the Duke’s to help support them.

“I would suggest, looking at the dates, that Corporal David Kenehan was more than likely killed during that battle, along with many more.

“I have been involved with this project for about ten years, and so far we have photos for about 500 of the 800 British soldiers killed in action. The memorial is the only UN cemetery in the world, and the Korean people built a hall of remembrance in the grounds to commemorate the British effort. In local tradition, they asked for photographs to hang on the walls, which is why we have been running this campaign.”

Mr Hough served in Korea for 14 months as part of his national service, and said 70 per cent of the British troops were national servicemen, which made it more important to remember the fallen soldiers.

Any family or friends of the Bradford soldiers can send photographs to Brian Hough, 116 Fields Farm Road, Hyde, Cheshire, SK14 3NP or contact Mr Hough on bhough116@gmail.com, or on 0161 3685622.
