A BY-ELECTION has seen Labour comfortably hold a seat on Bradford Council, securing more than half of the votes cast.

Joanne Lisa Sharp beat three rivals to the Wibsey seat vacated by the death of long-standing Labour councillor Lynne Smith.

Wibsey went to the polls yesterday, with the turnout only reaching 23 per cent.

Cllr Sharp secured 51 per cent of the votes cast. In second place was UKIP's Jason Paul Smith on 27 per cent, Richard Ian Sheard of the Conservatives came third with 19 per cent and Angharad Elizabeth Griffiths of the Liberal Democrats came last with three per cent.

The result leaves the political make-up of the Labour-led council unchanged.
