AN elderly woman has been left badly injured after she was struck by a car which mounted the pavement and carried her through a garden fence.

The 73-year-old victim was walking on the pavement when the car crossed a kerbed grass verge, struck her and then ploughed through a stone and wood panel fence, shortly after 9.30am.

The woman was carried on the vehicle into a front garden.

She was flown by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary following the accident involving a Volkswagen Passat in Hunters Park Avenue, Clayton.

She is understood to have suffered arm and leg injuries.

A West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesman confirmed a crew freed a casualty after the accident.

The accident scene was sealed off by police and traffic diverted.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the 18-year-old male driver had been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Police accident investigators are carrying out skid tests at the scene where the black car canme to a stop in the garden of an end terrace home.

Sergeant Andrew Gudgeon, of West Yorkshire Police, said at the scene: "The vehicle left the road to its nearside and went through the fence.

"The woman pedestrian who we believe was on the pavement suffered serious injuries and we are awaiting an update on her condition.

"We appeal for any witness or anyone with information to contact us and speak to PC Simon Ellis.‎"
