A MASKED gang armed with a gun and axe raided a convenience store in Barkerend Road last night demanding cash from a terrified shop assistant.

Detectives are appealing for any witnesses to contact them urgently to help track the three men, who police said were believed to be Asian.

Officers were called to the Costcutter store shortly before 9.40pm to reports that three men wearing balaclavas had entered the store with a gun and an axe making demands for till takings.

A police spokesman said the men left the store empty-handed in a vehicle described as a silver Peugeot.

A vehicle matching the description was found on fire a short time later in Heap Lane, Bradford.

The occupants of the vehicle are believed to have ran off towards Wapping Road.

A male staff member was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary for treatment for minor injuries and shock.

Officers will be carrying out extra patrols in the area today to provide reassurance.

Detective Sergeant Beverley Garnett of Bradford District CID, said: "This was understandably a frightening experience for the staff member involved.

"We treat any use of a weapon extremely seriously and it is vital that we identify and bring to justice those involved.

"We would urge anyone who was in the Barkerend Road or Heap Lane areas who saw any part of this incident to please call Bradford District CID via 101."

Information can also be passed anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

The incident also triggered response from a police helicopter seen circling above the store before moving away hovering over the city centre.

The store was back open for business today.
