AN annual street party will showcase a Bradford city centre street and its traders’ work.

The not-for-profit event will take place on North Parade, known as an 'independent quarter', where there are a number of bars and restaurants, on Saturday, July 30, between noon and 7pm.

The bars will be open throughout the day and street stalls will sell food from across the world including Chinese and Indian cuisine offered by Forks Cafe, a cafe and bakery helping former drug and alcohol users get back into work and run by The Bridge Project.

Several Bradford bands will also showcase their musical talents at the free event and there will also be fairground rides.

The third annual party has been organised by staff from the street’s bars and restaurants including Al’s Dime Bar and The Sparrow.

Gail Dignam, event organiser and co-owner of Al’s Dime Bar, said: “It is just about celebrating the diversity of Bradford and what we have to offer.

“It also celebrates the North Parade area and what that has to offer.

“It is a showcase for the bars, but is a family-friendly event."

She hopes the party will be well attended.

“On our Facebook page, 700 people have said they are interested in coming," she said.

“We will have the road closed for the entire day too.

“The first two parties have been brilliant. It is getting bigger and better by the year.

“Some of the venues on North Parade will be having outdoor bars at the street party.

“Five of the bars have been involved on the party’s organising committee.”

The first North Parade street party took place in July 2014 and was organised by Nigel Booth, a businessman with a maintenance contract on the street, and was supported by bars and other traders.

This month's event id the latest to showcase the street and its revival.

The street was run down five years ago with a third of shops standing empty, but has been reborn thanks to a steady stream of new businesses, many supported by Bradford Council’s Growth Zone funding.

North Parade was a losing finalist in the city category of last year’s Great British High Street awards.

Last year’s North Parade street party has been nominated for the Yorkshire Gig Guide Best New Festival 2016. Visit yorkshiregigguide.co.uk/grass-roots-awards-2015.html.
