THE spirit of Spain will come to Bradford next month when the city’s Independent Quarter hosts a fiesta event.

There will be sangria and, hopefully, sun at the BRADFermin festival, which links Bradford to the City of Pamplona in Navarra, Spain, famous for its San Fermin bull running festival.

The event, on Saturday, July 16, has been organised by West Yorkshire’s Spanish community and will include dancing, singing and cooking.

Revellers will be dressed in traditional San Fermin white with red hankies and "fajas" belt ties and parade through the city streets.

The festival, now in its second year, kicks off at Bradford Brewery, off Westgate, at 2pm with a “Chupinazo” rocket launch to start the celebrations, similar to how the traditional Spanish festival begins.

Festivities include a Spanish-themed barbecue, a DJ playing English, Spanish and Latin songs and a Spanish guitarist. There will also be a return of the BRADFermin male voice choir, led by Santiago de Laro - singing traditional San Fermin ballads.

Rather than a running of the bulls, the festival will involve a tour of North Parade, giving visitors an introduction to Bradford’s Independent Quarter. Many new bars and eateries have opened there since last year’s festival.

The event is organised by Bradfordian Sam Causton, who has attended the Pamplona fiesta a number of times with his Spanish partner and co-organiser, Veronica Garcia.

Mr Causton said: “BRADFermin 2016 is building on the, admittedly, rather raucous success of last year’s event.

“Sangria pistols will be strategically placed for the maximum enjoyment and no doubt, as the day draws on, the bright white will turn a little purple with splashes of red wine and Sangria.

“Yorkshire folk who’ve not been before have no need to worry if they don’t know the words to the traditional songs, as we will have song sheets available. For our visiting guests, a pub tour of North Parade will ensure they get to see some of the finest of Bradford’s pubs and bars, both new and established.”

Bradford Brewery operations manager Roy Davison said: “We’re delighted to have been invited to host this fabulous fiesta which promises to create a lot of merriment and high-spirited camaraderie between Bradfordians and Yorkshire’s quite significant Spanish community.

“There will be a celebratory BRADFermin beer and the procession around the Independent Quarter will be another great chance for us to show off to visitors some of the best of what Bradford has to offer.”
