BRADFORD Amateur Rowing Club continued its comeback after the Boxing Day floods wrecked part of Hirst Weir on the River Aire by holding its annual sprint regatta.

The club is funding £85,000 of restoration with 2,000 tonnes of sandstone being precisely placed across the river to return it to previous normal levels.

Almost 300 competitors took to Hirst Weir on the River Aire for the event.

Junior and senior competitors rowed downstream for 650 metres on the stretch of the River Aire, taking part in 88 races. A group of 139 crews from York, Tees, Hull, Sheffield and Doncaster also attended the day-long event on Saturday.

They competed in individual, double sculls and coxed fours races, made up of qualifiers and also finals.

Regatta secretary and rowing club president Dr Celia Hickson said: “At the beginning of the year, and up until April, we were concerned that the river was not going to be okay to hold the regatta on, but people have been working really hard to get the course ready.”
