MUSLIM organisation I Am Hussain gave out more than 3,000 bottles of water and offered tea and coffee to passers by in Bradford city centre.

It was the group’s second event handing out refreshments to the disabled, homeless and needy across all cultures.

The first event had taken place in December and was received well, said Georgi Majid, who had helped organise the marquee by City Hall with Wajahat Raza.

Mr Majid said: “The first event was the idea of Mr Raza’s seven-year-old daughter, Dwa Fatima, who said she wanted to do something kind for people. The December event was very well attended so we decided to hold another and promote unity across the community during the month of Ramadan.”

The Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Alun Griffiths, who went along, praised the organisers.

“I was made warmly welcome to the I Am Hussain event and found it interesting and educational; improving my understanding of the events of Karbala and the early development of Islam.

“Many people accepted the proffered water and plenty of ‘customers’ for the hot drinks in the tent. It was impressive that people in the middle of a very long fast were happy to look after the refreshment of others,” he said.
