BRADFORD will salute its brave men and women of the military this weekend as the city celebrates Armed Forces Day.

On Saturday, City Park and Centenary Square will be bustling with activities and a parade to mark this year’s Armed Forces Day.

The event is part of nationwide celebrations, where people right across the country come together to thank members of the Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy for their hard work and sacrifice.

The 144 Army Cadet Band will lead a parade of standard bearers into City Park to begin the service at 11am, followed by a display by the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Band.

There will be live music from the 1930s, 40s and 50s, dance, poetry, and workshops inspired by Pakistani artist Imran Qureshi’s sculpture, A Garden within a Garden.

Skipton Armed Forces Day will take place on Sunday in Skipton High Street, from 10am. The Yorkshire Regiment will bring a firing range and climbing tower, with performances by the regiment’s Corps of Drums.

The Lancashire Militia will also be at the event, which will feature a Spitfire flypast, hog roast, barbecue and more.

Bradford Bulls will mark Armed Forces day at their game against Halifax at Odsal, which kicks off at 3pm on Sunday. There will be military vehicles, an assault course and a curtain raiser match between the Army rugby league team and Scotland Warriors.

Andy Cross, the club’s media executive, said: “Armed Forces Day is something the club believes is important and integral to the community, to recognise the job the men and women of the armed forces do for the country.”

Elsewhere, Brighouse Gala will return for a 51st year at Wellholme Park in Bradford Road, from 12pm to 5pm.

A 1960s weekend will be coming to Haworth, with lots of 1960s music and 60s themed events over the two days. Fancy dress is encouraged for the event, which will be based mainly in Haworth Central Park.

Guiseley Carnival will come through the town on Sunday afternoon, with a parade starting at 1pm.
