THERE will be a 74-year age gap between the oldest and youngest filmmakers in the line-up for a new film festival based in Bradford.

The Drunken Film Festival will be held in multiple bars and clubs throughout the city centre next month.

It is organised by US-born, Bradford-based filmmaker Jax Griffin who began asking filmmakers from around the world to submit short films for the festival earlier this year. She was overwhelmed by the response.

By the time it came to finalising the festival’s line-up, around 1,300 films had been submitted from as far afield as Mexico and Uzbekistan. The list has now been finalised, and almost 120 films will be shown from July 25 to 30.

The youngest film will be Tress, by 10-year-old Iranian Sara Hessari. And at the opposite end of the scale, the oldest film maker is 84-year-old Pieter Van Duessen, whose first film, Keighley-filmed Netherby Naps will be premiered at the festival.

Films by Oscar-nominated animator Bill Plympton and Deborah Kampmeier, director of the controversial Hounddog, will also be shown.

Venues taking part in the event, sponsored by Bradford City of Film, include Bradford Brewery, the Record Cafe, the Library Bar in Glyde House and Deluis Bar, while film discussions will be held in Brew Haus and Forks Cafe.

The wrap party will be held at rock club Trash.

The films have been divided into different categories. Home Brewed films from local directors will be screened on Monday, July 25, with Tuesday’s theme being Documental. Films on Wednesday are around the theme of (Music) Video Killed the Radio Star with animation, horror and international films screened on Thursday. Friday will have Bavarian and International Spirit themes.

Mrs Griffin said: “Now I’ve sorted the line-up it is now all about co-ordinating events, promoting and seeing how many of the filmmakers can come in.

“I have had so many submissions, I’ve squeezed in a few more films but we’re still only able to show about 10 per cent of what was submitted.

“We had between 1,200 and 1,300 which is amazing for a first time festival.

“We’re focusing on the films this year. Next year we will hopefully expand to have more social events, but this year, being a first time festival we wanted to focus on making sure everything went off without a hitch.”
