A NEW Facebook page packed with tips and advice for mums-to-be and new parents has been delivered by Bradford midwives.

Bradford Antenatal Birth and BeYond (BABY) is a one-stop online place for mothers, fathers and families which helps guide them through pregnancy and prepare for labour and birth.

The page was the idea of Becky Palethorpe, a specialist midwife for parent education, and midwife Caroline Lamb at Bradford Royal Infirmary’s (BRI) Women’s and Newborn Unit .

Ms Palethorpe said the page was all about offering unbiased, clear information about pregnancy, birth and beyond.

“It’s also a place to spread the word about our antenatal and postnatal classes as well as maternity workshops and local events, all of which can help prepare for the birth of their babies as well as afterwards,” she said.

“We also share advice and information on a wide range of topics such as safe sleeping for babies, breast-feeding, nutrition and good health, immunisations during pregnancy and how to bath babies.

“We’ve even shared information about eco-nappies! There is a lot to take in for mums and dads-to-be and new parents and their families and they can feel overwhelmed by what they need to know but we really hope the guidance and help we give through the Facebook page, can help take away some of the apprehension.”

The page also showcases the innovative work and facilities of the Women’s and Newborn Unit which is part of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Its £1.2 million Birth Centre has delivered more than 5,000 babies since it opened in January 2013.

The Facebook page also shares links to websites and posts from linked groups and organisations such as the Royal College of Midwives, the National Childbirth Trust (NCT), The Lullaby Trust and Start4Life Information Service for Parents.

Since the page was created, just a few weeks ago, it has received almost 260 ‘likes’ with positive feedback from mums-to-be.

Ms Lamb said: “By posting pictures of our Birth Centre and our consultant-led Labour Ward, mums-to-be feel as though they are part of our Unit even before they come in to hospital to have their babies.”
