A GARDEN centre was badly damaged by a fire last night.
Firefighters from Cleckheaton and Rastrick stations tackled the blaze, after a member of the public saw flames coming through a roof at Whiteleys in Far Common Road, Mirfield, and dialled 999.
A spokesman for Cleckheaton station, who said the centre was closed at the time of the fire, said: "It burnt all the way through the roof. Part of the roof melted on to a lot of stuff.
"It had the potential to go up quite quickly. The guys really did well and managed to save a lot of the building.
"It caused smoke damage to quite a lot of the other buildings. There will be a massive clean-up today."
He added that the fire was caused by an electrical fault and that Northern Powergrid had to turn off the power around the garden centre for a short while. Crews were called to the incident at about 8pm.
